Introduction

Life Cycle Assessment and Ecolabels are considered to be good tools for marketing the green image of products and services. Ecolabels can be applied in various forms such as product label, package label, product literature, technical bulletin and advertising & publicity.

Under the ISO 14020 typology three types of environmental labels are identified: Type I, Type II and Type III. Each of these labeling schemes are operated and targeted at different groups according to business needs. One of the prerequisite to the participation of product environmental criteria is lifecycle consideration. Any strategy to improve the environmental performance of a product should ensure the environmental impacts are not transferred across media or stages of the product life cycle.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a tool to quantitatively assess the environmental impact of a product from cradle to grave. A number of supporting activities are needed at the international level to enable the use of LCA for applications ranging from technology innovations in product design and development to marketing through eco-labelling. Among the activities are the development of Life Cycle Inventory Databases, Selection of apt LCA software and creating awareness among producers, particularly the SMIs and consumers.

The forum will update the practices in Japan and the aspiration of Malaysia for participants in Ecolabelling and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
