LCA Application in Products Environmental Performance and Communication

LCA Application in Products Environmental Performance and Communication

One of the applications of LCA is for communicating product’s environmental performance to support the production and consumption of environmentally preferred products or services. The widely accepted measures for public and business communication to differentiate product as being environmentally preferable is through environmental labels and declaration.

SIRIM Ecolabel Product Carbon Footprint

There 3 types of environmental labels and declarations as governed by ISO 14020s, namely:

  • ISO 14021: Environmental labels and declarations –  Type II environmental labelling - Self-declared environmental claims

This international standard specifies the requirements for self-declared environmental claims may be made by manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers or any interested party having benefit from the claim. Consideration is required to be given to all relevant aspects of the life cycle of the product when claims are developed.

  • ISO 14024: Environmental labels and declarations – Type I environmental labelling – Principles and procedures

This international standard specifies the principles and procedures for third party environmental labelling programme awarding environmental labels to products. The environmental labels are based on a set of pre-determined requirements for a certain product category indicating the products are environmentally preferable. The environmental criteria is determined with consideration of the environmental impact based on product’s life cycle perspectives.

SIRIM in collaboration with SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd. launched Type II ecolabelling scheme in 2004. The ecolabelling criteria developed offers a wide range product category such as construction and building materials, lightings, personal care products, packaging, household products, textiles, wood and wood based products and services.

  • ISO 14025: Environmental labels and declarations – Type III environmental declarations – Principles and procedures

This international standard specifies the principles and procedures for environmental labelling programme awarding Type III environmental declarations using ISO 14040 series. Type III environmental declaration requires quantified environmental information based on product’s life cycle. This will enable comparison between products having the same function..

Through EU’s SWITCHAsia project (2013-2015), SIRIM in collaboration with SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd. has launched a product carbon footprint (CFP) labelling scheme for several selected product categories of building materials. The certification and labelling programme is managed by SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd. Please contact SIRIM QAS directly for more details.
